Manuscript check

To impress a publisher or an agent, even your first draft has to sparkle. I will read your work as a publisher would and I will report back to you comprehensively under the following headings:

  • Story - my understanding of the story as it is told. Is this the same as your intention?
  • Characters - strengths and weaknesses of your characters.
  • Structure - does the manuscript have a well-defined structure? How is the pacing? Have you written too much or too little?
  • Style - is your writing style appropriate and consistent? Do voice and tense work?
  • Presentation - don't risk the poor spelling, grammar and typos that will turn your reader off. I will also check for anachronisms and other factual matters if appropriate to do so.
  • Summary - what you might expect to hear from a publisher or agent.

Security and copyright - all manuscripts are treated on the basis that they are 'commercial, in confidence' and I will protect your copyright at all times, keeping your work secure and confidential.

My fee for reviewing a manuscript of up to 100,000 words, for a limited time only, is a modest £75 and for this I will read your work and give you a comprehensive, 1500-word report under the headings above.

Email me your manuscript and I will get back to you. Alternatively, send your hardcopy and a cheque made out to Peter Hough to: CPH, 12 Strandview Drive, Portstewart, Co. L'Derry, BT55 7LN

An author says:

"I was looking for someone to read the first draft of my first novel who would be entirely honest, objective and realistic. I found such a person in Peter Hough. His report was thorough, intuitive and of the utmost integrity. There was nothing that, if I was honest with myself, that I could not agree with. You cannot get a more helpful reader than that." - John Stapleton, Author
